"When are you speaking to the band?" a message arrives. "I wanted to ask if I can join as their extra sister."

However, there remains a key snag: I also desires to be the Haims' newest recruit. Furthermore, we are far from alone. Several famous supporters have openly begged for the role.

It's clear an irresistible appeal is at play. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana began their career performing shows at small eateries with their family. Today, they are multi-time Grammy Award nominees.

In the tradition of the best groups, they're a close unit. Their visuals frequently feature them striding in unison down the roads of Los Angeles. During performances, they perform with such pure joy you find yourself thinking, "I'd love to be a piece of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that fans came up to us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I got a guitar'," says Alana, the youngest of the trio. "That is the greatest honour. That is recognition in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can encourage people to start a band."

"So everyone gets an invitation to be the honorary part of the family."

Grammy Recognition

The trio have called into their homes, where they're resting up after an major tour in promoting their new album, I Quit.

They're right now processing the news it's been in the running for a top rock honor at the Grammys – with Haim the pioneering all-female band ever in consideration for the prize.

"I tune into the announcements every year, so it kind of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is announced," says Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this right or am I hallucinating'?"

The importance of the honor resonates with the band.

"We really set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a huge achievement," adds Alana. "Yet we're just thankful for the women that inspired us."

Emotional Upheaval and Candor

The project was born from a time of transition. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music inhabits that odd liminal space where you're relieved to be free, but not yet ready to start anew.

The themes follow departures and goodbyes. The sisters seek love, but not the kind of love they've had. You can hear them determining in real time who they want to be.

"I love summary, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is like a personal statement. You have to actively work on blocking the criticism and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Evolution of Sound

That newfound toughness demanded a fresh approach – more organic and powerful than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that was founded on the drums.

"Drums are such a detailed thing, and I care so much about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our memoir," quips Alana. "I always say, our albums won't commence until we find the ideal drum sound."

Anecdotes and Collective Camaraderie

The band's openness fueled the album's marketing, where the sisters shared some of their personal horror stories.

A former partner broke up with Este over a health concern. Alana recalled a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"When you're going through these setbacks, you just feel like there's no hope," says Alana. "Therefore to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's incredible."

An Assured Legacy

One can easily sense a change in the band. Now, Haim are more assured of their position in the industry.

They're top-billed acts, with chart-topping albums and an global following.

However Haim will consistently be their primary priority.

"We have been performing since I was a young child," shares Alana. "It's like nothing else that we were destined for. And I'm really thankful we've made it and we're still kicking."
