Guitar Hero Turns 20 – How a Plastic Axe Connected Generations Between Rock Fans

It has been two decades since Guitar Hero first launched in North America, giving everyday gamers the tools to feel like a rock star. Figuratively speaking, but try convincing someone who has mastered the epic four-minute instrumental break in front of a packed living-room audience.

Developed by the developers, Guitar Hero gave players a plastic guitar peripheral to follow on-screen cues moving along the screen in time with the music. Every sequence mimicked specific notes, creating the feel of a genuine performance.

The studio had already tried its hand with rhythm games prior to teaming up with the publisher, later acquired by the gaming giant in 2006. Together, they established the foundations for a surprising billion-dollar series that had a remarkable influence on numerous musicians featured, introducing decades-old bands to millions of gaming enthusiasts.

A former executive, ex-chief operating officer of Harmonix, remembers the early financial challenges of licensing the songs – even though initial releases mostly used cover versions.

“We rerecorded every song since the cost prohibitive,” he explains. “Despite having the necessary permissions alone, it was extremely difficult. We couldn’t get bands like legendary groups – the publisher had virtually no money, and we were pretty convinced it would fail. But once the game became a hit, and record sales airtime were going up, all artists desired to participate.”

He continues: “One of the remarkable aspects was the number of mothers and fathers reached out expressing gratitude for introducing their kids to the music they adored. It became a multigenerational phenomenon.”

Timeless Music Gains Younger Fans

Irish blues-rock band the Answer had Never Too Late in the 2008 release Guitar Hero World Tour. Lead musician the artist recalls how the series revived older hits back into vogue: “The game offered a bigger, younger audience. Typically this had been considered music that was past it, but then when it was featured on the title young people discovered it, suddenly it became trendy. This validated the genre, and got rid of the outdated label. It gave all our music renewed popularity.”

At that time, the Answer’s first record was still not available in the US, so Guitar Hero served as a primary platform for exposure for the group during their a North American tour supporting AC/DC. “Their crew were playing Never Too Late during travel, and some of them knew us thanks to the game,” Mahon says.

Rock’s Heavyweight Spin-offs and Lasting Impact

Rock’s heavyweight names soon took advantage of the series’ popularity, with Aerosmith, Metallica and others starring in specialized spin-off titles centered around their music collections and associated stories, imagery and rock’n’roll mythology. For example, Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, reportedly to have made the band greater revenue compared to their studio albums. It moved well over 500,000 units in its first week, and sales of Aerosmith’s music rose significantly at a time when the music business was already collapsing.

The series still motivates quick-handed dedication among its fans. Earlier this year, a streamer completed a remarkable feat featuring Through the Fire and Flames – a notoriously difficult power-metal song popularized through Guitar Hero – on Clone Hero, a no-cost alternative with similar mechanics and extensive personalization features. This track is difficult even in expert mode, not to mention played at increased tempo while hitting a single one of the thousands of cues. The streamer stated requiring nine months of practice.

“Guitar Hero offers a, fantasy thing. Just as with other games, it doesn't imply you ought to pick up a real gun and go to war,” says DragonForce guitarist Herman Li.

The band had already completed a profitable run before their hit appeared on Guitar Hero III, but Li says it turned them into a household name. “I recall the record label calling to tell me that our records were moving rapidly,” he shares. “Popularity surged on the subsequent tour, and we were playing just before top acts at the event.”

Indeed, the band's visibility via the game proved so vast that it risked eclipsing everything else accomplishments. Recently, the song featured in a trailer for Despicable Me 4. “In the past I thought otherwise, but I’ve made peace with it,” Li says. “If you only listen to a single track, that's fine – each person has their own musical journey and I’m glad we’ve been part of people’s lives”.

The Lasting Impact of a Iconic Controller

The best promotion, whether it’s for cars, apparel or video games, extends beyond mere transactions – it inspires a longing. Was the game able to harness this? “Precisely what we were trying to create,” Dornbrook says. “The excitement of performing as a rock star in the spotlight. From day one, the creators felt that humans have a natural urge to create songs, and their goal was to leverage innovation to enable everyone to do it”.

Most of Guitar Hero games were released in just a five-year period from 2005 to 2010, featuring spin-offs such as the DJ version, including a spinning deck, and the band-focused game. After that, the publisher’s interest in plastic instruments waned, aside from a short-lived revival several years later.

Games like Clone Hero and Fortnite Festival have maintained the scene active, with expectations of a new product from the founders on the way. Recently formed developers has begun work on their first rhythm-based title. Original co-founders are both involved in advisory roles. Is the world ready to embrace a new entry following Guitar Hero?

“Our team believed those games could be similar to sports games where you can update every year,” he remarks. “With abundant new music it could remain evergreen, so I’ve always been hopeful. It's entirely possible why it can’t persist for future fans.”
